Tom Ford
Tom Ford, the former creative director of Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, turned louche sexuality into high fashion in the 1990s.
In that decade, Mr. Ford was arguably the most influential fashion designer of his generation, re-imagining 1970s chic with unsubtle sex appeal. Under his guidance, the houses of Gucci and, later, Yves Saint Laurent flourished, with Mr. Ford overseeing every creative aspect — fashion, advertising, even store design — and making the labels a can’t-live-without. At Gucci, he was a superstar, designing 16 collections a year. I am writing to you to try and fiber isolatorevaluate a steel-framed painting I acquired at a junk store. If it is an original I am well aware of its value. It is titled “The Artist’s Garden at Vetheuil” and is by Claude Monet. I would very much appreciate your sculpture are great work of art that many people recognizeopinion of the authenticity and value of this painting.

People write me, call me, stop me on the street and in grocery stores to ask me about their “painting,” and 9.9 times out of 10 the “painting” turns out to be a print.
On rare occasions, it is a rare print and somewhat valuable, but most times it is a mass-produced commercial print that has only a very small value. Unfortunately, that is the case with the piece in today’s question.
Claude Monet was born on Nov. 14, 1840, on the high power isolatorRue Laffitte in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. He was baptized Oscar-Claude Monet (his family called him “Oscar”), and his father was a grocer, his mother a singer.
When Oscar-Claude was a child the family moved to the port city of Le Havre in Normandy. His father wanted young Oscar-Claude to follow in his footsteps and become a grocer, but the younger Monet knew he wanted to be an artist.
He entered art school in 1851 where he made charcoal caricatures, which he sold for a few francs each. Around 1856-57, young Monet met artist Eugene Boudin on the beach, and Boudin taught him to use oils and to paint “en plein air” (i.e. outdoors rather than in a studio).
At age 16 Monet left school and moved to Paris, where he eventually met some of the young painters who would become Impressionists like himself – men such as Renoir, Sisley and Bazille. I will not recount any more of Monet’s stellar career (he died on Dec. 5, 1926), but he painted “The Artist’s Garden at Vetheuil” in 1880 (one source says 1881). The size of the original is 59 5/8 by 47 5/8, and it was once part of the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection before it went to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1970, where it can be visited to this day.

Solid-state lighting hits the street
For years, incandescent bulbs accounted for the bulk of the multi-billion dollar global lamp market, followed by alternatives such compact fluorescents, halogen, and high intensity discharge lamps. LED lighting only entered the conversation in the context of niche markets such as flashlights and architectural accent lighting. No more. Fueled by climate change, an overtaxed power grid, dwindling natural resources, and enormous performance improvements, the solid-state lighting market is exploding.
“In the LED industry, historically, we have done a 10X improvement in lumens per dollar per decade and a 20X improvement in lumens per package,” says Willem Sillevis-Smitt, director, strategic marketing and business management at Philips Lumileds (San Jose, CA). “This pace is picking up right now. Our ambition is to 10X improvement in five years. That’s what we think is possible.”

There are multiple approaches to producing white light with LEDs. One method involves mixing the output of red, blue, and green LEDs. It can produce a good quality white light but involves more components, increasing both cost and points of failure. A bigger issue is the fact that the efficiencies of the different colors of LEDs vary, as do their responses to temperature and aging. For best performance, they must be electrically balanced.
An easier approach uses phosphors to down convert the output of an LED, typically a blue gallium nitride (GaN) device. Yellow phosphors such as yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) down convert part of the output from the LED and mix it with the primary emission to produce a white light (see Figure 1).

Behind the scenes, not in the limelight
After more than a decade of basking in the limelight, Central High School student Jacy Thibert traded in makeup sessions, costume fittings and the sound of applause for the much less glamorous spotlight control booth.
The difference between acting in theater productions and spending show nights manning a heavy spotlight is “like black and white,” she said. You’ve probably seen the new gu10 led home lighting products in storesBut she’s always been intrigued by theater and wanted a change of pace in her 12th and final year of being in the Summer Performing Arts program.
“Behind the stage, you’re just trying to accent what’s going on onstage,” Thibert said. “You get less facial time, you get less of the accolades and stuff, but it’s still so rewarding because you get to be up here and see the whole panorama and how everything comes together.”
She’ll start her senior year of high school in the fall, and she had spent some time learning the ropes of sound and lighting operation in the past. But she made the plunge earlier this summer and decided to be one of five students in the spotlight booth fulltime.
“Putting on a show to entertain people, I just think it’s incredible,” Thibert said. “I’d really like to learn all of the aspects of anything I can about the theater.”
While the actors take a bow at the end of the night to a round of applause, it takes about 20 students in the tech crew to make sure everything oil painting reproduction from Old World Masters to Contemporary artists.from hair and makeup to lights, sound and video all go off without a hitch.
